Happy OWL-O-WEEN!!

What is it about owls?  They are everywhere!  Cute owls, not-so-cute owls, scary owls, realistic owls, stylized owls.  OWLS OWLS OWLS!!

Well, of course, that makes ME want to make OWLS!  So I have added these two to my Halloween collection for 2013.  What do you think?

These two adorable owls are all dressed up for trick-or-treating.  The brown owl wears a green tunic trimmed with black crepe paper, pompoms and flocked rick rack.  He has a matching wool felt hat and he carries a little jack-o-lantern bucked filled with treats.  The tawny grey owl is dressed in an orange tunic trimmed with white crepe paper, pompoms and tiny pompom fringe.  Her hat is orange with a white pompom.  She carries a little skull bucket filled with candy corn.

Both of these owls are listed in my etsy shop, A Piece of Lisa.

I've been working on Christmas/Winter items for the past couple of weeks.  I'll be unveiling some of those pieces soon, so stay tuned!  In the meantime, Happy Haunting!

Trick or Troll

It feels so great to be back in the studio, hard at work creating new characters from clay.  I've been working on Halloween spooks, because let's face it, Halloween will be here before you know it!  At least, in my world of art fairs it will be!

What I love about making Halloween characters is that they can be anything.  ANYTHING!  Yes, there are the classics like witches, ghosts, Dracula and black cats.  But there are also goblins, ghouls, trolls, and monsters.  And who among us has really seen one of those?  They live in our heads, mostly, right?  So the creative freedom is infinite!!

A couple of days ago this guy appeared in my head:

I'm not sure where he came from, but I really like him!!

He looks a little mean and scary, but I've had a nice chat with him, and he's a lot sweeter than he looks.  Trolls love treats, too, and he's just out for a little Halloween fun.

He dressed in a purple t-shirt with a moon and bat, velvet bat wings and a crepe paper collar.  He has a funny tuft of wool roving hair and carries a little jack o'lantern filled with his favorite Halloween treat--tiny candy corn.

What do you think of this guy?  Is he a keeper?  He will be haunting my etsy shop very soon.  The tricksters are beginning to trickle in.

I'm back at it again today.  I have this vision of a zombie cheerleader.  What??  We'll have to wait and see where that goes....

Have a great day!

Halloween is Coming

Fall is fast approaching, and quite frankly, I'm ready.  At least I'm ready to put this horrendous heat we've been stuck in behind me.

I actually love fall.  I love the cool, crisp mornings that give way to warm, sunshiny afternoons.  I love how beautiful the trees become.  I love knowing Halloween is just around the corner.

In my studio in the last few weeks, I've been preparing for this upcoming season, making adorable Halloween characters.  The popularity of Halloween has surged in the last several years, and that makes me happy.  I enjoy making Halloween pieces.  There are so many different characters you can do!  One of my favorites is witches.  Here are a couple new ones I've just finished:

This is Ginger.  She is a chubby little thing, because she LOVES her Halloween candy!  She is wearing a cute little orange and white striped bodysuit under a black dress with a lace skirt.  Her collar is made from crepe paper and her tall witch hat is made from paper covered in black velvet.  I love the joyful expression on her face, but my favorite thing about her is her wild orange hair!

And this is Dottie, Ginger's cousin.  She's wearing a fun orange bodysuit with white polka dots and she has pretty little gems on her shoes.  Her pleated skirt, cape and hat are all made from black mini-dotted paper.  She's got a fluffy white crepe paper collar and a zig-zaggy stitched ribbon belt.  I love her sweet little face!  Her hair is not quite as wild, and a lovely blond.

So which witch is your favorite?

These two darling girls will be appearing soon in my etsy shop.  You can go there now and find lots of other adorable Halloween characters.

Thanks for dropping by!
