Don't Forget About Autumn!

Sometimes I feel autumn and Thanksgiving get a raw deal.  We fill our homes with Halloween decorations and our bellies full of Halloween candy, and for some, as soon as the last Snickers bar is consumed and the ghosts and goblins have been tucked away for another year, the Christmas tree is already up in the front window!  There is this whole month of November when we can celebrate the beauty and the bounty of fall! But it seems to get shoved aside in favor of the red and green.  Don't get me wrong....I LOVE Christmas, and I LOVE to decorate for it.  But I have a strict rule about not putting up my tree until the first week of December.  OK, granted.  A lot of that rule stems from the fact that I don't have time to put up my decorations until show season is over.  But honestly, I wouldn't even if I did.  I like to keep the magic of Christmas in December.

(Now, I'm not scolding those of you who have already started decking the halls.  If that's your thing, great.)

Today I'm going to show you a couple of fun little characters I created just for fall.  I had such a good time making my funny Jacks for Halloween, I thought to myself, "Why not an autumn pumpkin man?  Pumpkins are not just for Halloween!"  And here is what happened when I listened to that voice in my head:

He has prominent facial features accented with lovely brown eyes.  The hat is hand-sewn from wool felt and trimmed with chenille and a autumn-colored ribbon.  He holds a garland of greenery and sunflowers.

Also sculpted with a prominent nose and big brown eyes, he features a similar hat adorned with a sunflower, and carries a bouquet of autumn bounty.  Both pieces have golden yellow and green stripes on their arms and legs, green mittens trimmed with chenille and brown boots.

I'm really pleased with how these two autumn Jacks turned out.  I love the colors of fall so much!  You can find both of these adorable fellows in my etsy shop, A Piece of Lisa.

Happy Fall!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I wanted to send Helga and Hazel to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.  These two little witch sisters have been out gathering pumpkins and berries for their autumn feast.  They are warmly dressed in flannel skirts and wool felt vests with matching hats.  Autumn is their favorite time of year....a time to celebrate nature's bounty and the blessings of family and friends.

Helga

Helga's strawberry blond hair is straight and unruly.  She has to keep it tied up in pigtails, but it still sticks out in all directions!  She wishes she had pretty curls like her sister, Hazel.

Hazel

I'm taking a much needed break from my work this week, and spending time with my family for the holiday.  I'm so blessed in so many ways....with a wonderful husband, a big loving family, fabulous friends and I job I LOVE.  I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving and that your blessings are far too many to count!

"Praises we give for the bounties of fall,
But the harvest of friendship is blessed above all."

with love
Lisa

PS--Neither of these adorable autumn witches have made it into my etsy shop.  If you are interested, send me an email at apieceoflisa@cox.net

Halloween is Coming

Fall is fast approaching, and quite frankly, I'm ready.  At least I'm ready to put this horrendous heat we've been stuck in behind me.

I actually love fall.  I love the cool, crisp mornings that give way to warm, sunshiny afternoons.  I love how beautiful the trees become.  I love knowing Halloween is just around the corner.

In my studio in the last few weeks, I've been preparing for this upcoming season, making adorable Halloween characters.  The popularity of Halloween has surged in the last several years, and that makes me happy.  I enjoy making Halloween pieces.  There are so many different characters you can do!  One of my favorites is witches.  Here are a couple new ones I've just finished:

This is Ginger.  She is a chubby little thing, because she LOVES her Halloween candy!  She is wearing a cute little orange and white striped bodysuit under a black dress with a lace skirt.  Her collar is made from crepe paper and her tall witch hat is made from paper covered in black velvet.  I love the joyful expression on her face, but my favorite thing about her is her wild orange hair!

And this is Dottie, Ginger's cousin.  She's wearing a fun orange bodysuit with white polka dots and she has pretty little gems on her shoes.  Her pleated skirt, cape and hat are all made from black mini-dotted paper.  She's got a fluffy white crepe paper collar and a zig-zaggy stitched ribbon belt.  I love her sweet little face!  Her hair is not quite as wild, and a lovely blond.

So which witch is your favorite?

These two darling girls will be appearing soon in my etsy shop.  You can go there now and find lots of other adorable Halloween characters.

Thanks for dropping by!
